Featured in Voyage LA, an interview with Miriam Elyse

Miriam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

I grew up in northern California, lucky enough to be surrounded by nature and raised by a spiritual mother who introduced me to yoga and meditation at a young age. That foundation helped me to cope with the challenges in my personal life, including sexual harassment and emotional abuse, which lasted throughout my childhood. Yoga helped me to find confidence and grace in my body and I got my teachers certification at the age of 18.

My passion for helping others heal and overcome sexual trauma came from my experience healing myself through embodiment practices, and that is really the basis of everything I do. I received my undergrad in Psychology in 2005 and began studying acupuncture and body-mind psychology in 2006, and became a licensed acupuncturist in 2012. During this time, I was participating in shamanic healing ceremonies, which helped me understand the subtle energy body which deepened my abilities as a healer.

I was also practicing Tantra yoga while in school for acupuncture and found it to be an incredible practice that helped me feel more aware of my body and the power within me.

I moved to LA in 2013 for a Tantra Yoga Teacher Certification course and began apprenticing with my teacher. I learned how to integrate the ancient healing system of tantric yoga, breath work and energy work with acupuncture and found it to be like the missing link to help people be self-responsible and self-aware in their healing journeys.

I now practice in Los Angeles, working with women to help boost fertility, embrace healthy sensuality in their partnerships, and empower pleasure in everyday life.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

I wish I could say the road was smooth! I think the reason most healers become healers is because they have not had a smooth road and they have had to seek solutions to help heal themselves.

I started on the healing path because I had to heal myself. It is impossible to lead someone where you have not been before, and I know that all of my struggles have helped me better relate to my clients and understand what they might be experiencing when they come to me.

The past few years have been particularly hard, and just when I thought I was getting comfortable, life threw me a few major curve balls. I went to India to study Tantra yoga and got very sick which turned into 2 years of chronic fatigue. During this time, I was working at a rehab center with recovering heroin addicts and I wouldn’t even be able to leave the house the day after I worked with them because I was so exhausted.

While in India, I also got an infection in one of my eyes which severely compromised my vision. I felt lost and hopeless and I experienced what some call “the dark night of the soul,” where I questioned everything about my life, and didn’t know how to move forward.

Despite all of the obvious challenges, my biggest obstacle has been my own mind and being afraid of my own power. Every obstacle I have faced reminds me to come back to my center and the more I am able to do that in the face of life’s major challenges, the stronger I can be for the people who come to me seeking healing and guidance.

I came back to center and found peace again with meditation, yoga and breath work, alongside a daily gratitude practice.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Miriam Elyse, Lac – what should we know?

My passion for healing and uplifting women to find their voice, embody their sensuality and step into their power IS my business.

Acupuncture is an incredible tool to help balance the body and mind, and can bring us to a state of homeostasis from which we can do the real healing work.

“The real healing work” is what you can begin to do once you are free from pain and hormonal and energetic imbalances. If you are compromised in these basic areas, it will be nearly impossible to heal the inner wounds that are blocking you from your highest expression.

The body is your ground zero, and when the body is in balance and functioning well, you are available to do the inner healing from traumas that are beneath the surface. If you had a trauma in your childhood, it has helped to form who you are and it is still likely affecting everything you do whether or not you are aware of it.

My goal is to help women to really know their power and worth, and find strength in their bodies which translates to confidence and personal empowerment in every area of their life.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?

I came to LA in 2013 to study with my friend and teacher Psalm Isadora. At the time, she was leading Tantra Yoga teacher trainings and workshops. Through assisting her programs, I witnessed myself growing in ways that I didn’t know were possible. I didn’t realize how much stagnation I held in my body in the form of muscular tension and numbness. It really lit a fire in me and led me to my true purpose.

Working closely with her changed my life, and I began teaching tantra workshops with the intention of helping heal what ails so many modern people which is the lack of true intimacy and connection to themselves and each other. She recently passed away and I am forever grateful to have learned from her and to have been guided by such an amazing powerful woman.

I also give thanks to my Prayer circle for being a council for me and holding me to the light when I was going through my dark times. I feel so blessed to have learned from and shared with such a strong group of women who are committed to freeing themselves from illusion and living in authenticity and unconditional love.

My clients are AMAZING and I get so much inspiration for watching them transform and become more powerful and joyful versions of themselves. That is really the fuel that keeps me going and if it wasn’t for the revelations and inspiration coming from them I would not feel as grounded in my work.
